Battery Spencer

Yet Another Bridge Angle: peeking out from behind Battery Spencer.

Battery Spencer

This one is from a roll of Fujifilm Acros developed at home.

I use the Acros film simulation on Fujifilm digital cameras all the time, so was pretty excited to pick up the actual film. Unfortunately, it was discontinued back in 2018 (subsequently revived) but I bought a pack of 10 in 2019 and still have a few rolls left.

I like the contrast and grain of the film. I dislike how the negatives curl so much that I need to cut them and store them under some heavy books for a few days before scanning!

Boardwalk

Always a lot of nice colors on the boardwalk.

Boardwalk

The first time I tried CineStill 50D I thought it looked too washed out. This time I was more careful with exposure, and even the shots I thought would be overexposed came out looking really good.

Who would have guessed an ISO 50 film likes having a lot of light? πŸ˜„

Neapolitan ice cream is apparently an Americanization of Spumoni, with more locally-popular flavors.

But the best ice cream flavors are green anyway (pistachio & mint chip, of course).

Shark Fin Cove

Does it look more like a shark tooth or a shark fin to you?

I think looking through the viewfinder I had cropped out the humans there in the corner, but the frame lines are probably conservative. Now with the full scan, I kind of like having the humans for scale.

There are so many amazing spots to stop and explore along Highway 1. One problem I have is that I keep making stops, and then eventually get tired and then keep driving. That means I’ve seen all the spots “on the ends” but am missing the ones in the middle!

Coast

Sometimes I’ll look at a photo and remember everything about it β€”Β what day it was, smells, sights, feelings, etc.

Cove

This one, I remember the quiet. The sound of the waves was there quietly in the background, but there were no people, no chirping insects, just quiet.

Salt Pond

According to the historical markers all over, this was supposed to become a booming port in the south bay.

Pond

I guess they evaporated salt here too, leaving behind nice marshes and clear water.

On the plus side for the present, they make for excellent hiking spots since they were often in the middle of nowhere in high places.

It’s a fine line between unwanted flare and nice rays of light.

Can be especially hard to tell with a rangefinder. I took a photo, turned a tiny bit, took another photo, and repeated.

Share the Road

Sometimes you see a sign and then camp out in front of it waiting for something interesting to happen.

One problem with rangefinders is parallax, and it can be hard to “line up” a bunch of things accurately. Sometimes the combination of shutter lag and slow reflexes can save you, depending on what direction things are moving :).

The fog and the clouds have lifted, and it’s been a week of clear skies.

Yesterday though the day had a few clouds and I thought, if the clouds stayed put and we fast forwarded to 8pm, this would make an amazing sunset.

Also trying out a new film stock. I’m on the lookout for “cheap” classic cubic grain B&W film that I can easily develop and scan myself.

Car landscapes

One great thing about California is how you can pull over to the side of the road, point a camera out the window, and see some incredible landscapes.

I remember reading something about framing your shots, and it gave the example of a photo taken out an airplane window vs that same photo while showing the frame of the window too.

In this case, having the bit of side mirror visible wasn’t on purpose but I like it as a hint on where the photo was captured from.

Social distancing

Out on the street, in the days of social distancing.

I feel limited in that I only walk as far as it’s reasonable to then walk back home.

Also, I don’t usually have people in the frame but in these days the streets are so empty that spotting people is the interesting part!
